As far as I know, all you have to do is call up (probably get the car owner to call) the insurance company and ask for your husband to be put on the insurance for the dates you need.

I have already tried that, with no luck. I think I will go with the refund tactic. So going to San Francisco and buying a car, insuring it in a friends adress but in my name and then get a refund of the remainging time...
